Philosophy

This Is The True Philosophy Of Jujitsu And All Budo. Every student and teacher of Budo must understand that you reach only what you strive for. Your goal determines your achievement. Therefore, strive for the ultimate! The true philosophy of Budo is simple. "In the technique the doctrine is revealed." Therefore train, constantly train.

In addition to your constant effort to improve, little by little, the 21 character traits in the USJA Budo Code, there are other ideas and methods which will help you as you learn Jujitsu. These are the "training secrets" of Jujitsu.

Admonition For Jujitsu Students. Everywhere, in every age and time, training, preparation, and determination have been the keys to success. Success in Budo means mastery, it means accomplishing all of the goals you set for yourself in Budo, be they mental, physical, self-defense or spiritual growth.

Learn To Flow. When you are faced with a life-threatening self-defense situation, you will be, if not prepared, paralyzed by fear. Fear is nothing but a bewildered reaction of tense withdrawal from the unknown. Fear is remaining separate from the situation, refusing to flow by using your technique. How do you overcome fear? By training, with the emphasis on smooth, flowing, constant movement. There are no gimmicks, no easy, painless solutions. You must train to be ready, so that you will react properly with a powerful, reflexive, unthinking response to every attack. When you properly train yourself (no one else can do it) you will respond instantly to every self-defense situation.

Do The Repetitions! How do you achieve this unthinking effortless flow? By performing about 5,000 repetitions of each technique. Do them in 50's or 100's. Dr. Mark Girshov, a great Sambo and Judo teacher, and a producer of Olympic Medalists, scientifically determined that 5,000 repetitions (on the average) would make a technique reflexive. This training will change your character. You can do it at home or in your Jujitsu club with your training partners, but you must do it. The secret is to concentrate your attention so that your Ki will flow. We will cover Ki later.

Use Constant Self-Testing. As you develop your skills you should constantly test yourself. When you complete a few thousand repetitions of several techniques, ask a training partner to attack you in any way they wish. If your defenses against specific attacks are not automatic and smooth, more repetitions of your defenses are needed.

Learn To Use "Ki" Or Vital Force. Every human being projects from his body a type of electromagnetic force. This is sometimes called the "aura," and it is possible to photograph this aura with the use of special photography.

Yoga experts use the Sanskrit word "prana" to describe this vital or life source. The yogis equate spiritual enlightenment with the ability to cause this force to flow freely up the yogi's spine through seven centers called "chakras." When the prana reaches the 7th chakra, the yogi leaves what we call the "real" (hamburgers and debts) world to understand and rest in the transcendental.

In Budo this force is well known. The Chinese word for vital force is "chi," and the Japanese word is "ki." In fact, one branch of Budo, Aikido, contains the word ki, so that the word Aikido means "The way of gathering vital force." In this USJA Jujitsu Manual, we will use the Japanese word "ki" to designate vital force.

Every Jujitsu student must clearly understand that ki is not a theory. It is an actual physical force which the student can learn to control and use in self-defense situations. The basis of the utilization of ki is the ability to center the mind on technique rather than on fear (a possible negative outcome). Fear is the mind killer. Fear paralyzes. It is only by becoming obsessed with, and immersed in, the technique that the student overcomes fear. Then the student will think of nothing but executing the technique, or will not think at all, and the ki will flow.

When you perform about 5,000 repetitions of a technique, the technique becomes a permanent part of your body. A technique learned in this way never leaves you. It is always there. It will present itself and will be performed smoothly and successfully (without any conscious thought) whenever conditions are right for its execution.

All of these facts about the functioning of ki are an integral part of the theories of quantum physics or quantum mechanics (developed since 1900), which have totally changed the concepts scientists now have about the nature of our Universe and our relationship to it.

The essential truth of both Budo and quantum mechanics is that every particle in our Universe has life, in the sense that it can receive and process information and react accordingly. In effect then, every electron exercises choice. We strongly recommend that you read "The Dancing Wu Li Masters," by Gary Zukav. This book is a very readable overview of quantum mechanics. It is the concepts of quantum mechanics which help us to understand that every Budoka is a part of everything in the Universe. The truth is that the vital force of the Universe is available to each one of us; if we will practice calm, forceful, skillful repetitions of each technique with the consciousness that the universal vital force flows through our bodies, especially through the hands and arms as we execute the techniques.

Jujitsu should be practiced with calm and joy. Think of every movement as part of the dance of life. Do not think of the attacker as your enemy, but rather think of his movement as something which you can accept, guide, and control. Think of the attacker as a dancer with whom you gladly and skillfully dance. The attacker is your partner in the dance of life. Become one with the attacker and execute your technique smoothly and powerfully. This is what Leggett Sensei, the great English 9th Dan, taught us at the Budokai in the 1950s. He said there was "live practice" and "dead practice." Live practice occurs when you abandon yourself totally to the technique and think of each movement as an expression of your total personality and your absolute obsession to master the technique. You must yearn for perfection. This does not mean that you execute the technique feebly. Rather, practicing in this kind of a trance gives you tremendous power and force.

Always remember to let your ki flow as you practice. Always think that your power is limitless. Always believe that with continued practice, your skill and your power will continue to grow until you concentrate all the power of our Universe into each of your movements.

You will find that after you have practiced a technique 1,000 times (and that's only ten days at 100 per day) it is no longer the technique of your Instructor or of this manual. It will be a technique that you have invented or created out of the clues and hints given to you by your Instructor and by the photographs and explanations in this Manual. You will inevitably add special methods for performing each of the techniques as you develop mastery. It does not matter if you change the techniques. What does matter is making the techniques totally effective, considering your own strength, size, and body style. Out of your diligent training will come your Jujitsu, totally unique; actually created by you alone. Believe this. Work for this. It is mastery.

Then, after you have mastered 30 or 40 techniques, you will go back and change all you know! As you practice, constantly varying the situations which the attacker presents to you, you will change and develop mastery. Create multiple-person situations to give you the capability to apply these techniques in every conceivable way. When you practice in this way, every practice session becomes a goal in itself. It is the practice itself which brings happiness and skill. "To the devil with winning or losing; let's practice!" That should be your motto!

Jujitsu is a method of training which will allow you to face life and death. Make no mistake; you will have to fight for your life at least once before the end. That fight for life may come at the end of your life or, as with a law enforcement officer, you may have to fight for your life every year. It does not matter. You will have to face death and fight for your life at least once in every lifetime. Therefore, being a Budoka does not consist of fighting. It consists in training to prepare for that great battle for life which must eventually come to us all. Jujitsu, and in fact all of Budo, has character training as its major purpose, because all of the character traits you develop through continual and joyful practice are the armor which you will put on to face the battles of life.

Train hard, because as Phil Porterís instructor, Todd Sensei taught, "In the technique the doctrine is revealed. Train hard, because it is through training that we avoid confrontations."

Principles of Jujitsu

"Become a master of self defense In six weeks." "In this one hour video we will show you how to bring any black belt to their knees." "Learn the secret fighting art guaranteed to make you the winner." These and other such ads have duped the American public into believing that anyone can learn to effectively defend themselves in a very short period of time with devastating techniques. The mere learning of techniques may take a short time and the techniques may be devastating, however, applying them at a time when needed will be almost impossible without proper training and practice. There is much more to learning self defense than just the techniques. To more fully understand the important principles of self defense and Jujitsu, you need to study other materials that provide insight into the principles, tactics, and strategies of self defense and Jujitsu. Three highly recommended books are: The Art of War by Sun Tzu, The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi and Combat Strategy by Hando..

The Levels of Force

Law enforcement officers are held to specific standards of conduct. These standards include what levels of force an officer may use under various situations. A lot of people donít realize that these same standards also apply to the general public as well. You, as a martial artist, must abide by the same laws that apply to law enforcement officers. All techniques, when applied in real situations must be measured, reasonable, and ethical.

  Communication Attempt to initially control or de-escalate unacceptable behavior using verbal or non-verbal communication skills
  Unarmed Self- defense If communication attempts fail to control the situation or the situation escalates unarmed defensive tactics may be used.
  Non-lethal Weapons Should previous attempts fail, legally approved non-lethal weapons may be used to regain control. These weapons include the use of chemical sprays, water, bed sheets, towels, etc. that are used to restrain an assailant.
  Lethal Weapons Lethal weapons should only be used in a life threatening situation. The weapons include guns, knives, sticks, bats, etc.

Y Hand

The Y-hand is a vital success contributor in almost all Jujitsu techniques. It is used for grasping or locking onto the attacker. The Y-hand is achieved by extending the thumb to the side and keeping the fingers together. The Y is formed between your thumb and fingers. The Y-hand is especially useful when an attacker doesnít have a shirt on or if the attacker is wet or sweaty. To illustrate the effectiveness of the Y-hand simply grasp your wrist with fingers and thumb on top. Now slip your grabbed wrist out of your other hand. Itís easy to escape. Now grasp your wrist again, but this time, wrap your fingers around one side of your wrist and the thumb around the other. Escape from this grasp is much harder.

Posture of Body - Posture of Mind

The mind and body in Jujitsu are intertwined. How you view, perceive, and approach a situation will determine how you respond to it. For example think of how you psychologically respond to a red flashing light as opposed to a blue one that comes up behind you as you are driving down the road. Your response is different. In one you donít get upset very much, while in the other you get very upset and start thinking of what you are doing and will be saying.

In Jujitsu, if your mental posture is such that you are thinking of taking out the attacker, the chances are that the situation will escalate to a level where you will use too much force. At the same time, a rigid mental posture will cause your mind to have tunnel vision and your body to become rigid and slow in reacting.

Phases of a Physical Attack

In any attack there are three response phases to the attack that you will go through. They are:

  Perception (mental) Becoming aware that there is something wrong
  Analysis (mental) Deciding how you will respond to the perception
  Reaction (physical) Your actual physical response to the situation

Through hard training and practice, the response time for each phase is shortened and becomes more accurate.

Awareness

Awareness is the foundation of effective combat readiness and is defined as being constantly alert. Awareness or sensitivity to situations of heightened risk reduces the possibility of being taken by surprise. Your perceptive senses, sight, hearing, smell, or "feelings of uneasiness," will give you the first warning of danger. Research tells us that the person who is unaware of any danger cannot physically react to an attack within a distance of six feet. Develop the habit of being constantly aware and alert.

Self Defense Factors

Following is a list of many factors involved in self defense and Jujitsu. Study their importance and come to understand their application in Jujitsu. Your Jujitsu instructor should discuss these factors throughout the training program.

USJA Jujitsu Rank Structure

Introduction

As previously mentioned, the USJA Jujitsu system is unique in many ways. Like other martial arts, there are beginning levels (kyu grades) and black belt levels (dan grades). In the USJA Jujitsu rank system there are six beginning and ten black belt levels. USJA Jujitsu ranks and certificates will be awarded according to this system.

The similarity to other martial arts ranks ceases at this point. The basis for the kyu grades in USJA Jujitsu is the attainment of Shodan or first degree black belt. To achieve Shodan, the student must learn and become competent in 157 techniques and have knowledge of six mental training areas. The order in which the student learns the techniques for Shodan is not important. Therefore, specific techniques for each rank level have not been identified. Instead, a specific number of various types of techniques for each rank have been established. By designing the rank structure for kyu grades this way, the student and the instructor both have input in how the student progresses through the ranks. Also, focus is placed on higher level achievement rather than on rank attainment.

Kyu Grades through Shodan

There are fourteen training categories from which the student must practice techniques for each rank. With the exception of one category (Instructor Directed), the student may select the appropriate number of any technique in each category. For example, if the student is training for Rokkyu rank, two wrist grab escapes are required. The student may select any two of the wrist grab escapes demonstrated in the manual, or with permission of the instructor, the student may substitute other wrist grab escapes in lieu of those in the manual. This freedom of choice allows the student to select techniques that are more specific to the studentís needs.

At the same time, the instructor may select any of the suggested techniques listed in the Instructor Directed category or may choose other techniques as desired. This allows instructors, who study other martial arts, to incorporate techniques from those arts into the studentís training.

The following chart summarizes the required number of new techniques that must be learned at each rank level from Rokkyu through Shodan. When the student tests for rank, he/she must perform all technical requirements for the rank with skill and demonstrate the techniques learned for all previous ranks. The total number of required techniques to be examined at each rank are located in the Rank Examination Appendix at the end of this manual.

A minimum of two months in grade and 30 hours of training are required for each kyu rank. It is expexted that an Ikkyu will remain in that rank for nine months to one year before he reaches Shodan rank.

Higher Rank Charts

The techniques learned for Shodan provide students with basic Jujitsu knowledge and application. The higher ranks, Nidan and above, require students to perform at a higher level that integrates previously learned techniques into smooth flowing defenses. In addition, these higher ranks require additional techniques, knowledge in kata (forms), teaching, first aid, defenses from various positions, and more in-depth study of Jujitsu and the martial arts to name a few.

The techniques to be learned are more specific than in the kyu and Shodan ranks. Time in grade at each rank is also longer, allowing the student to become more proficient and to learn the required information.

The following chart and outlines summarize the higher level ranks. They should be used as a guide for instructors and students. Specific techniques have not been identified. It is the responsibility of the instructor to select the appropriate techniques for these ranks.

Ability to teach Jujitsu arts up to and including Shodan (1st degree black belt) level.

Ability to demonstrate proficient use of one additional weapon, students choice of weapon (knife, bo-staff, jo-staff, tonfa, sword, other)

One (1) additional martial arts kata with a minimum of fifteen (15) moves (Jujitsu kata, judo kata, karate kata, weapons kata, or "own" kata).

Four (4) additional throws, studentís choice.

Five (5) counters to being thrown.

Ten (10) combination techniques. Each combination must include the following elements in any order of use:

A. One (1) Atemi/strike;

B. One (1) throw/takedown; and

C. One (1) control hold, joint lock/break, arm bar, or choke.

Five (5) escapes from ground holds. Studentís choice of holds and escapes.

Give a short oral or written presentation on the history and principles of Jujitsu.

A basic understanding of the human anatomy; major bones, muscle groups and vital areas.

Policy On Rank Promotions In Jujitsu

Basic USJA Promotion Policy. The standard USJA promotion policy is the same for both Judo and Jujitsu. That is, USJA Jujitsu Examiners may recommend promotion to any rank up to the rank below their own Jujitsu rank. For example a Jujitsu Nidan may recommend promotions up to and including Jujitsu Shodan.

Ranks Obtained Through Other Ryu. The USJA will recognize Jujitsu ranks awarded by other legitimate Jujitsu organizations if proof of rank is provided. A certified English translation and copy of the certificate are required. The rank will be registered with the USJA and marked on the membership card in the "Other Martial Arts" section. Promotion to a higher rank and to obtain an USJA certificate, requires examination by a certified USJA Jujitsu Examiner, under the current USJA Jujitsu rank requirements.

Promotion Ratification and Timing. All Jujitsu promotions are ratified through the USJA National Headquarters. Promotions are made at two levels. For kyu ranks and dan ranks up to Yodan, accredited "Jujitsu Examiner" Sensei may test and evaluate candidates, and send promotion recommendations to the National Office. Yodan and above ranks must be approved by the USJA National Jujitsu Board of Examiners, which evaluates recommendations quarterly. All recommendations must be properly documented. Supporting evidence and appropriate fees must be included.

Eligibility. USJA members, regardless of age, may be eligible for promotion in Jujitsu when they have completed the appropriate time in grade and can demonstrate the rank requirements. Each individual must be recommended by a USJA Jujitsu Examiner.

Technical Demonstration Requirements. USJA members, who are candidates for USJA Jujitsu rank, must demonstrate Ė with balance, effectiveness, and skill Ė the techniques required for the rank for which they are being examined. Other than time in grade and demonstrating the technical requirements for that rank, there are no other requirements for promotion in Jujitsu.

Promotion Fees. Fees for all USJA Jujitsu ranks are the same as for Judo and are listed on the Recommendation For Promotion form..

USJA Jujitsu Seminar Program. In 1995, the USJA launched a nationwide Jujitsu Certification Seminar program. High dan examiners in USJA Jujitsu conduct Jujitsu promotion and certification seminars in many states. Contact the USJA for a Jujitsu examiner or instructor in your area whom you can contact for a USJA sponsored Jujitsu seminar.

How Do You Get a Jujitsu Rank Certification and Promotion Seminar For Your Club? To schedule a USJA Jujitsu Rank certification and promotion seminar call or write the USJA (719-633-7750) for a contact name to arrange a seminar or clinic. There are special arrangements between the Dojo Sensei and the clinician for these clinics. Fees may vary, dependent on location and travel etc. Clinicianís names and contacts are also noted on the USJA Jujitsu web page, at http://usja-judo.org/

For students, remote from a local Dojo, clinics are held throughout the year, which may be conveniently located near them. Another alternative is to attend one of the annual Judo/Jujitsu camps held each year at locations across the country.

What Jujitsu Rank Will You Be Promoted To? The general policy of the USJA is that those Judo Sensei who already have qualifying experience in Jujitsu, may well be promoted in Jujitsu to the same rank they hold in Judo. They may be promoted to a different Jujitsu rank from their Judo rank depending on their technical knowledge of Jujitsu. This will be decided by the Jujitsu examiner conducting the seminar. However, a high rank in Judo does not automatically qualify one for the same rank in Jujitsu. Obviously, there is a great difference in the singular sport of Judo, and the sport of Jujitsu, the combat aspects of combat Jujitsu and the art of Jujitsu. Even though Jujitsu can be described as "Judo with and attitude," Jujitsu knowledge, techniques and ability are different from Judo knowledge, techniques and ability, and employs quite a different outlook on what actions are performed. The competition rules mindset in Judo conflicts with the "no rules" mind set on combat Jujitsu.

USJA Jujitsu Rank Examiner Certification. The USJA certifies Jujitsu examiners according to Jujitsu rank as listed on the "Application for Certification as a USJA Jujitsu Rank Examiner." Examiner certification is not automatic as part of a promotion. Only examiners certified by the USJA, are eligible to recommend candidates for Jujitsu rank promotion. The latter is an important qualification, and ensures that the candidates are truly reviewed on their Jujitsu ability and teaching quality, in addition to their abilities in self-defense techniques learned in other martial arts.

USJA Jujitsu Master Rank Examiner (M.E.) Certification.

1.      Examiners below Rokudan, will be able to recommend ranks up to and including Sandan. It will require a Sandan to recommend  for Shodan. I.e., non M.E. examiners can recommend to two ranks below their own, for both rank and examiner status. These ranks will not be required to go before the Ranking Board, but will be accepted by HQ if all other details are in order.

2.      Rokudan and above can recommend to one rank below their own, but it will require two M.E. examiners to review for examiner certification.

3.      Only Rokudan and above can be recommended for M.E.

4      It will require personal review during Rank Testing at camps or clinics, by two current M.E. Examiners, for M.E. examiner certification. It is acceptable for a single M.E to recommend a Rokudan or above for M.E. certification, as long as a second M.E has personal knowledge of the candidate and concurs. It will still be necessary for the Ranking Board to vote on the appointment.

Policy on Rank Registration. The USJA Jujitsu Division would like to accommodate all practitioners in the various styles of the art, in getting their legitimate ranks registered. To protect the validity of these ranks, we require that all requests for rank registration are accompanied by a photo copy of the latest rank certificate, and the completely filled out Jujitsu rank form, describing all the dates and times in grade in each previous Dan rank.

Upon entry as members, the provided rank registration, as described on the candidateís provided certificate copy, will be added to our database,. No one will be promoted or accepted at a higher rank level, until reviewed and tested by a qualified USJA Jujitsu examiner of higher rank, and/or by the USJA Jujitsu Ranking Board. This provides for formal rank registration, and for future rank promotion.

The USJA realizes that there are instances, where Jujitsu Sensei have been teaching independently, or have been teaching their own system for many years, and may even be Hanshi or Soke (highest ranked individual in their organization) of their own style. Since these Sensei may not have been ranked by a national organization, and no knowledge of their style and ability may be evident, the USJA requires that evidence of quality is provided in the form of a written curriculum for the various ranks, and/or an unedited video tape of the techniques in that style.

Corroborating evidence may also need to be collected through visual observation by higher ranking members of the USJAís Jujitsu Ranking Board. In other words, the Ranking Board needs to be convinced that the described rank compares with other national standards, particularly as it relates to total time in the various ranks.

The USJA will not accept higher Dan ranks that are not within the time in grade schedule, as defined on the Jujitsu application form. The USJA will neither accept rank promotions that are not deemed to conform to an acceptable standard.
